Ensemble Tropes

  • Badass
  • Blood Knight: She gets antsy if she goes too long without a fight.
  • Buffy Speak: Lapses into this sometimes, usually when attempting to describe supernatural phenomena.
  • Catchphrase: "Has anyone ever told you you have very nice hands?" Used as a flirtatious line that her victims might or might not realise the true meaning of before it's too late. See "Creepy Souvenir"
    • Subverted once, where she says "Normally, this is the part where I say 'You have very nice hands', but, really, these are hideous."
  • Creepy Souvenir: Human fingers. She mummifies them in baking soda and koshering salt and keeps them in a box.
  • Dark Action Girl
  • Demonic Possession
  • Fiery Redhead: Was one of these in life.
  • Ghost Amnesia: Not for any supernatural reason; when you're pushing 280 years old, the first twenty-someodd just naturally end up getting fuzzier than the rest.
  • Ghost Shipping: With Janus.
    • Sex By Proxy: Only way Averna can actually get laid these days, what with lacking a physical body.
  • Interplay of Sex and Violence: The fact that she has a thing for Janus and doesn't want to burn, dismember, or kill him makes him very unusual. Conversely, there is a sexual element to the thrill she gets from hurting/maiming/killing people.
  • Knife Nut
  • Meaningful Name: "Averna" is the name of a Roman goddess of the underworld, probably synonymous with Prosepina/Persephone.
    • Mythological Theme Naming: Both she and Acerbus are named after Roman goddesses. Coincidentally, Janus is also named after a Roman god.
    • Last Name Basis: "Averna" is her surname (to be consistent with Acerbus's naming scheme). Her given name is Altagracia.
  • Mugging the Monster: She and Janus deliberately invoke this for fun. They are, of course, the monsters in question.
  • The Needless: Downplayed. Averna still "sleeps" by embedding her eye in a solid object and going into a sort of "low power" mental resting state, but it's not clear if or how she gains sustenance.
  • Nominal Hero: To put it frankly, Averna's a serial killer and an undead adrenaline junkie. It's only the rest of the party (but mostly Janus) that keeps her mostly pointed at "bad" guys.
  • Our Ghosts Are Different
    • Aura Vision: "Soul sight" provides an overlay in which living things are assorted colours, the undead are pitch black, and inanimate objects and corpses are greyscale.
    • Glowing Eyelight of Undeath: The only part of her not Invisible To Normals
    • Invisible To Normals: One would be forgiven for assuming that Averna's entire being is her Glowing Eyelight of Undeath due to Rule of Perception, but she actually has about the same volume as she had in life.
    • Perpetual Motion Monster: Subverted. Averna sustains herself by passively absorbing shed life energy generated by the people around her.
    • Red Eyes Take Warning
    • Why Did It Have To Be Ghosts?: All ghosts have an innate phobia of each other and anything else similarly or moreso supernatural. The reasons behind it are not clear in-universe, but it's strong enough to be effectively prohibitive of the formation of ghost communities.
      • Ironic Fear: There is actually a perfectly logical, if slightly roundabout, reason for ghosts to be terrified of each other, but the only characters who would know about that reason aren't talking. The closest in-universe guess so far is that they're afraid of things that could potentially re-kill them, but even that, while technically true, isn't quite right.
      • Screams Like a Little Girl: Occasionally, if it gets bad enough.
  • Parental Substitute: For Acerbus.
    • The Caretaker: Takes better care of Acerbus's body than he does, because, for the most part, he can't.
    • Mama Bear: Downright territorial about it, with shades of Hypocritical Heartwarming of the "I'm the only one allowed to hurt him" variety. (From her encounter with the NMSE sealed in Abe: "He's mine, and this wasn't part of the deal. Bring. Him. Back.")
    • My Beloved Smother: Somewhat less so, now that she has some reassurance from Janus that they'll figure something out in the event that Acerbus grows out of his dependence on her.
  • Psycho For Hire
  • The Three Faces of Eve: The Seductress, with Diane and Penny
  • Token Evil Teammate: Has mellowed out a little since joining the group, but still the closest to Chaotic Evil in the party.
  • Trying To Catch Me Fighting Dirty
  • Violently Protective Girlfriend: It's a very rare occasion that Janus can't do all the asskicking he needs for himself, but when it happens, Averna is more than ready to more than make up for it.
  • Walking Disaster Area

  • Ace Pilot
  • Blind without 'Em: While he can see perfectly fine without his dataglasses, he is so used to the additional information he gets from them that he's quite impaired when he doesn't have them.
  • Defector from Decadence: His home planet is extremely militaristic and racist. He left after seeing that aliens weren't loathsome like the propaganda he heard said.
  • Goggles Do Something Unusual: His dataglasses project a HUD in combat situations, show the results of scans, and even let him surf the hypernet (though he usually gets Penny to do that when he needs information in a tense situation).
  • Old-School Dogfighting: Averted. Vermilion is more than able and willing to fly Penny like a spacecraft, not an airplane.
  • Smart People Build Robots: While Vermilion created Penny's AI core, fighter body, and holographic projector, he needed help in order to build a robot body for her.
